Protein shakes are just a convenient way to get more calories and protein. If it helps you get the food and protein you need to grow, then they’te worth it, otherwise there’s nothing special about them compared to other good foods.

As for good routines, check out the following

Starting Strength
Bill Starr’s 5×5
Stronglifts 5×5
Sheiko
Westside for Skinny Bastards
Wendler 5/3/1
Texas Method

All of these routines are 3 or 4 days a week. On the days you don’t lift you’d do other exercises for speed and stamina. For stamina you can do whatever cardio you’d like. Try to vary it to build endurance all over, for example, running, rowing, swimming, boxing, bodyweight conditioining circuits are all good forms of cardio.

Try to alternate your cardio from steady state (ie a jogging at a constant pace) and intervals which are periods of hard work alternated with recovery. An example would be sprinting 20s and resting 10s, and repeating that for 4minutes, taking a break and doing that another 3times.

As for speed, the key to speed is power. Power is the ability to develop maximum force in minumum time. For most people the issue there is the maximum ammount of force they can develop. The best way to train this is weight lifting. Depending upon the routine there may be room for speed work, although beginners usually don’t benefit as much from speed work as if they just lifted more.
